TORONTO -- It was 33 seconds of furious action that was just the latest reminder that no game with Alex Ovechkin on the ice is truly over until the final buzzer sounds. Justin Jackson Jersey .With Sweden holding a two-goal lead, Ovechkin flicked a shot that beat Sweden goalie Jacob Markstrom with 33 seconds left in the game, cutting Russias deficit to just one. Then, with seven seconds remaining, Ovechkin struck again, batting a puck out of midair while skating in on Markstrom, attempting to then send it toward his stick for the equalizer. The puck got past Markstrom but it was ruled on the ice that Ovechkin batted with his glove rather than his stick. He felt he touched the puck with his stick. The replay said otherwise. The call on the ice stood.I thought I touched it. To be honest with you, I didnt see the replay, Ovechkin said after the 2-1 loss. I dont know if it was the puck or the stick. I definitely feel the touch on my hand on my stick. It doesnt matter right now. Its over, so we have to forget about it and move forward.Ovechkin was a force in this game, laying out Swedish defensemen on multiple occasions with huge hits then providing the offense in a flurry at the end. But ultimately, the situation room in Toronto agreed with the officials on the ice.According to the official statement from the situation room, video review supported the call on the ice that Team Russia forward Alex Ovechkin batted the puck into the net with his glove, which is not allowed. From Markstroms perspective, he saw the puck hit Ovechkins glove and in the aftermath watched as Ovechkin tried to convince the referee that the puck hit his stick. Then, he held his breath.I was crossing my fingers and toes that it wouldnt count, Markstrom said. We got a little lucky there too, but I think we deserved it. D.J. LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. -- Buddy Ryan was remembered not just as a defensive master who won two Super Bowls and spawned a legacy carried on by players and twin sons now coaching in the NFL.He also motivated players with a gruff but caring approach that helped them succeed on the field and in life. Ryan had his players backs no matter how tough and demanding he seemed, a loyalty noted and reciprocated by many of his pupils who traveled far to pay their respects Friday. The thing I loved about Buddy is that everybody got the same treatment, Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary said during a 20-minute eulogy at St. Lawrence Catholic Church that ended with an emotional pause.Theres not enough time to go into so many other things that he taught me as a player, as a husband, as a father. But what he did for me I am eternally. ... in debt.Gratitude was the common theme as former players from several teams Ryan coached said their formal goodbyes to the defensive mastermind, who died Tuesday at 85. Notably present were several members of the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won the Super Bowl thanks to the dominant 46 defense coordinated by Ryan and featured the appearance of head coach Mike Ditka among an impressive group of Hall of Famers. Also present were the members of the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals, two NFL teams Ryan led as a head coach. Ryan was also a defensive line and linebackers coach for the 1968 champion New York Jets.It was great to see Eagles players along with a lot of Bears, and not just on that `85 team, said Gary Fencik, a defensive back on that Bears team and a pall bearer. There were just so many (guys) that played for Buddy.Ryans family -- including Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan and twin brother Rob, an assistant -- and many friends hugged, smiiled and took selfies as they no doubt reminisced about the man and success he built. Cheap Running Shoes Store. Judging from the Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers present, it was more like an NFL reunion. And that speaks volumes about Ryans legacy.Besides Ditka, Fencik and Singletary, the Bears contingent included Hall of Fame defensive linemen Richard Dent and Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, Doug Plank and Leslie Frazier, who became a head coach himself. Bears team official Pat McCaskey spoke briefly before Singletary followed with a heartfelt eulogy that touched on Ryans loyalty to his players.Standouts from Ryans teams in Philadelphia were there, including Seth Joyner, Eric Allen and Clyde Simmons. Hall of Fame defensive back Aeneas Williams, who played under Ryan in Arizona, was among a group of pall bearers who carried Ryans wooden casket from a hearse bearing the U.S. Army seal from Ryans service during the Korean War.Singletary said their presence proves how they felt about Ryans devotion, and added, when you look around this room and see all these men, that is the result of a coach that is loyal.Ryan was buried in a private ceremony at Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Before the procession pulled away, players mingled with both Rex and Rob Ryan, with discussions of football overheard.Ryan raised horses on a farm here and Singletary suggested that he might train some up in heaven. On the other hand, McMichael speculated that his former coach wouldnt be far from his first love.I dont know who the defensive coordinator is on Gods football team up there, McMichael said, but he just lost his job.---AP NFL website: and Wholesale NFL Jerseys Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys NFL Jerseys From China Cheap Nike Basketball Jerseys Wholesale Hockey Jerseys China Nike Baseball Jerseys Cheap College Jerseys China Cheap Football Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Canada Wholesale NHL Jerseys Canada Wholesale Nike MLB Jerseys Canada Cheap NBA Jerseys Authentic Canada Stitched Soccer Jerseys Canada Cheap Jerseys Canada NFL ' ' '

BROOKINGS, S. LOUIS -- St. Its not a typical start to the season for Michigan State as it opens with Furman on a Friday night. The No. 12 Spartans wont see normal for a while, but the Friday Night Lights atmosphere at Spartan Stadium (7 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network) is a welcome sight. Next week coach Mark Dantonios team has a bye before hitting the road to take on Notre Dame.Dantonio prepares to enter his 10th season leading the Spartans having resurrected a program that saw almost no consistency in the preceding decades.Hes never had a losing season and has been to a bowl game every year, and in the last three seasons, Dantonio has led the Spartans to wins in the Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl, a spot in the College Football Playoffs and three straight finishes at No. 6 or higher in the national rankings.Add in three Big Ten championships and 11 or more victories in five of the last six seasons, and its clear Dantonio has established the Spartans as a national program. We can sell results, we really can, Dantonio said. We can sit there and say, This is what weve done, these are the things you can look forward to if you come to school at Michigan State. Theres opportunities for you.Thats really the difference there. Early on in the process, that was not the case. But now it seems like thats what we sell.Furman was 4-7 last season and its only game against a Power 5 school resulted in a 42-3 loss at Virginia Tech. Some believe the Spartans will see a drop-off, something critics have been predicting every year since Michigan State won a share of the Big Ten title in 2010.That doesnt mean there wont be challenges moving forward. Ohio State continues to be among the best programs in the nation and Harbaugh mania has taken over at Michigan with the presence of coach Jim Harbaugh convincing most the Wolverines have returned from their funk. And thats just the hurdles Michigan State has in the Big Tenn East. Nike Dunk Shoes Outlet. . Winning another division title will be tougher as the Spartans must replace quarterback Connor Cook -- the winningest quarterback in school history -- along with defensive end Shilique Calhoun Big Ten Receiver of the Year Aaron Burbridge. The conference schedule is favorable as both Michigan and Ohio State travel to Spartan Stadium late in the season. If Michigan State can continue its mastery of Michigan (winners in seven of the last eight) and keep challenging the Buckeyes (MSU is the only team to beat Urban Meyer in Big Ten play), the results will be there once again. And the rest of the conference will continue to wonder when the drop-off will come.To remain on a level plain, the Spartans need stability at quarterback.Tyler OConnor doesnt need to be Connor Cook, but it needs him to manage the Spartans pro-style offense and limit the mistakes. He was Cooks backup the last two seasons and helped orchestrate the Spartans win at Ohio State last season when Cook was out with an injured shoulder.Hes also got as much knowledge of the offense and has the respect of the players in the locker room. OConnor had plenty of chances to transfer but had his sights set on the season. To date, OConnor has one big hit on his resume -- leading the Spartans to a victory over Ohio State at Ohio Stadium last season while Cook rested a sore shoulder. But as he told teammates in his fall camp speech, he didnt stick around East Lansing to be a one-hit wonder.I cant imagine not being here after hearing things about different schools, he said. We have it great here, not only football-wise but the culture and the people and education. Theres just too much to pass up on and go somewhere else if you dont know how good it really is here. Sussex 291 for 6 (Joyce 92, Archer 60*, Jordan 59*) trail Essex 358 (ten Doeschate 83, Lawrence 65, Jordan 4-99, Archer 3-84) by 67 runs Scorecard There Luke Wright was, wandering slowly from the field, strangled down the leg-side off David Masters, the sixth of six wickets to fall for just 49. Cheap Nike Epic React Flyknit Pink . Harry Finch, with a broken thumb, would only bat if absolutely required, so Wrights big plan to haul Sussex back into the game looked in tatters, with just the bowlers left to bat. That plan, for the first half of the day, had been going so well. First thing, Chris Jordan, a little luckless yet also a wee bit wayward on day one, bowled with verve and pace to dock Essexs meek tail, picking up four wickets for five runs, as just 21 was added to the overnight score. Then, for an hour each side of lunch, Ed Joyce batted with grace and class in the company of the more watchful Chris Nash to reach 124 without loss. Barely a bat was beaten, hardly an appeal uttered in anger. Joyce was in total control; he drove with precision, flicked crisply to leg and cut and pulled with elegance. When 100 came up, he had 72 and a fourth Championship century of the season - and 46th in first-class cricket (it is his stated aim to reach 50 this season) - seemed a formality. Nash, capable of scoring at such a lick, blocked away in awe. Then, unplanned, came afternoon drinks. On a warm afternoon, Essexs fielders were beginning to look beleaguered - and perhaps beguiled by Joyce - regrouped. The tight line, and perhaps a little nip, of Masters, with the first over of the break, caught Nash napping, and James Foster took a fine catch low to his right. Next over, Luke Wells appeared to nick off to Graham Napier, but - with Essex incredulous and fielders delivering a volley of abuse to the batsman - the umpire adjudged it was arm, not bat. It mattered not, as next ball Wells pulled a bumper straight to fine leg. Send-offs - needless to say - followed.Another couple of overs on and it was Joyce out hooking, while David Wiese came and went for a breezy 13, which included two fine straight drives, before he edged the impressive Tom Moore - who sage judges in these parts say is playing for his future at Essex - to the lone slip. After tea, Wrights wicket immediately followed that of Ben Brown, through his stroke early and caught at mid-on, and 124 for 0 had become 173 for 6.Then Jofra Archer, who bowled with such promise on day one, joined his mentor - and the man who arranged for him to come from their native Barbados and play in southern England, Chris Jordan, in the middle. While they made a scratchy start, they both settled and, on a pitch with wonderful carry, the Essex seamers - Ryan ten Doeschate appears to have inherited his clubmate Alastair Cooks distrust of spinners - tired once more.Jordan and Archer - which sounds rather like a Hello! magazine cover in the noughties - went tit for tat. Jordan pulled beautifully on the front foot so Archer - who enjoyed the majority of the strike - handsomely cover drove, before standing tall to wallop Porter for six over square-leg. They moved to 50 in consecutive balls in Dan Lawrences solitary over and, by stumps, the partnership - all stylish, swashbuckling fare - was worth 118, and the lead had been eroded to just 67. Wright neednt have looked so hangdog after all.Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, enthused their coach, Mark Davis, we had got ourselves in a really good position through the openers, and from there, you hope to have a proper day with the bat, and get 500. But that didnt prove to be, we lost a few, then those two came together - what an amazing partnership, and it got us back in the game.Jofra came in in a tricky situation but is a pretty fearless cricketer with bat and ball. Hes not fazed by the occasion, or by playing his first few games in this country. You cant really instill that in players. Hes not just a bowler, hes an allrounder and we are really excited to have him in our ranks. Hes had a great week, hes very driven and is quick learner. CJ knows him very well, hes the one who got him over in the first place, they know each other well. Hes always said how good he is. He could be a superstar for us.Jordans excellence with the bat - and as a leader, too, perhaps - was matched by his early showing with the ball. Ashar Zaidi had one too many swish and was caught behind, while nightwatchman Porter was trapped plumb in front. Masters nick made it four in 13 balls, then Moores stumps went flying. With the dangerous Napier, playing his final game on his home ground, left stranded, Jordan - not for the last time - had got his team out of trouble. Much more work lies ahead for Jordan, but thanks in large part to he and Archer, a thrilling contest awaits. Wholesale Nike Epic React . "Hes going to have hip surgery on Jan. 7, and hell be expected to rehabilitate for four to six months beyond that," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said Friday in an interview. In our recent appraisal of the top sleepers, breakouts and busts for the upcoming fantasy basketball campaign, we defined a sleeper as player who will far surpass his average draft position (ADP) in standard ESPN leagues for the 2016 season. If we consider deep as something far below the surface, then our interpretation of deep sleepers can be understood as players found far below the surface, in this case past the top 120 picks in our current ADP index, who can far exceed the statistical expectations of this tier in drafts. In going past at least the 120th pick on average in drafts, we can offer players realistically available to you in the later rounds and some names that might not even show up on our ADP list. Working the waiver wire is crucial in fantasy hoops, but it also helps to get ahead of the market by securing some intriguing assets that have the potential to become enduring values for the coming season. With mining for value in mind, lets delve into some deep fantasy sleepers for the 2016-17 NBA season.Eric Gordon and Clint Capela, Houston Rockets Gordon is a career 38.3 percent shooter from beyond the arc and just one of five players over the last three seasons to average at least two made 3-pointers while shooting at least 40 percent from beyond. With some upside in the assist department beyond his elite shooting potential in a combo role for Mike DAntonis up-tempo, spread offense, Gordon is an ideal pick in the twilight rounds. As for Capela, he could thrive as a blocks and boards commodity with increased minutes for a team likely to challenge for the highest pace in the NBA.Dario Saric, Philadelphia 76ers Dario finally made it to South Philly after spending the past two years playing in Turkey. The lottery pick will see increased minutes with Ben Simmons sidelined for several months and offers rare statistical diversity in regards to assist production.Justin Anderson, Seth Curry and Dwight Powell, Dallas MavericksCurry could immediately provide cheap shooting pop for investors, as hes already flashing rare efficiency from beyond the arc in the preseason for a team that desperately needs more scoring touch from the backcourt rotation. Powell reportedly bulked up this offseason after earning a massive payday from the Mavericks. If he can earn around 25 minutes per night for a thin Dallas frontcourt, Powell could become a valuable source of boards -- as he averaged 9.9 per 36 minutes last season. The sample size from Andersons rookie season is truly limited, as he only averaged 11.8 minutes and appeared in 55 games for the Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki has gone out of his several times this preseason to praise Andersons ascending game. The minutes might not be there for Anderson to merit drafting in league smaller than 12 teams, but keep an eye on his progression given the preseason buzz and the injury-prone veterans ahead of him in the backcourt.Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Trevor Booker, Brookyln NetsWe already covered RHJ in our bold predictions piece, but as a reminder, hes a top option for sourcing steals and could provide one of the better rebounding rates at the small forward position. As for Booker, hes slated to start at power forward and this is mostly an angle for increased minutes, as he averaged a double-doublle using his per-36 minutes clip from last season in Utah. Cheap Nike Epic React Flyknit Brown. With Brooklyns thin frontcourt offering Booker tons of exposure and upside on the glass, hes a fine late stash in deeper formats.Jamal Murray, Denver NuggetsMurray could earn meaningful minutes right away in Denver with Gary Harris due to miss four-to-six weeks due to a groin injury. Late shares of this savvy shooting rookie could prove rewarding, as hes already shown an ability to lead the pick-and-roll in the preseason and bankable shooting metrics could buoy some nice nights to start the season.James Ennis, Memphis Grizzlies Ennis got some love from ESPNs Kevin Pelton in our staff sleepers piece mentioned above. We agree with Peltons endorsement, as Ennis averaged 15.9 points, 2.7 3-pointers made and 1.3 steals in just over 31 minutes per game over the past nine games for Memphis last season. Glowing reports of Ennis cleaning the glass in training camp suggest he could add some statistical diversity to his line, while any player who can average more than two 3-pointers and one steal is a valuable commodity to consider late in drafts.Kyle Anderson, San Antonio Spurs Known as Slo Mo for his lack of speed, Andersons deliberate style of play could prove truly rewarding for fantasy purposes if he ever nets increased exposure. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich wants to get him more time this season, while a thin frontcourt featuring an aging and somewhat injury-prone Pau Gasol could eventually lead to some spikes in minutes for the versatile Anderson, who can play the three, four or even run the point. As evidence of his diverse skill set, Andersons per-36 rates last season includes 10.1 points, 6.3 boards and 1.7 steals.Bismack Biyombo, Orlando Magic Biyombo played more than 25 minutes 26 times for the Raptors last season and recorded at least 10 boards and two blocks in 12 of those outings. With a surge in minutes on the way this season as the lead rim protector for the Magic, Biyombo -- going 152nd on average in ESPN drafts -- is a fine source of blocks and steals for those who loaded up on guards and wings the early rounds.Willie Cauley-Stein and Ty Lawson, Sacramento Kings Over the final 11 games last season, Cauley-Stein averaged 30.3 minutes and delivered 11.7 points, 6.8 boards and most valuably 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Wed like to see more rebounds given the uptick in minutes, but this Kentucky product offers helpful potential in steals and blocks -- two of the scarcest stats in all fantasy hoops.Lawson is merely a rental, as hes due to start the first eight games of the season with Darren Collison suspended to start the season. The speedy veteran point guard was somewhat terrible on the court last season, shooting below 40 percent from the field while averaging jut 5.7 points between stints with the Rockets and Pacers. As recently as the 2014-15 campaign, though, Lawson was a fantasy stud, with nearly 10 dimes and more than 15 points per game. Lawson is a fine rental commodity for that first two weeks of the season, giving investors a buffer to seek out more enduring point guard assets from the wire over that period. OAKLAND, Calif. . -- Elvis Andrus had been dealing with flu symptoms and kept his celebration rather subdued after the Texas Rangers clinched the AL West, so he asked manager Jeff Banister afterward to please put him in the lineup again Saturday. He promised to be ready to play. The lone veteran in the lineup a day after Texas won captured another division title, Andrus showed it by hitting a pair of two-run homers in the Rangers 5-0 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.Yesterday unfortunately it was the first time I couldnt celebrate with the guys or go after the game and celebrate, so I was like I might as well play tomorrow if I wont be able to celebrate the right way, he said.Texas wants to keep winning to earn home-field advantage.Yu Darvish (6-5) had all the run support he needed on a couple of big swings from Andrus, who had his first career multi-homer game. Andrus, who will get a break Sunday, also established career highs for homers with eight and RBI with 68.Andrus said it means a lot to have that production, and told teammates he would one day have two home runs in a game.Theyre going to laugh when I bring up a conversation about homers, for sure, I dont have too many in my career, he said. They didnt today.Darvish allowed only Stephen Vogts two-out single in the first until Yonder Alonso singled with one out in the fifth. Marcus Semien followed with a walk, but Darvish escaped unscathed.Banister rested his regulars aside from right fielder Nomar Mazara and Andrus, who had his second career four-RBI game.Robinson Chirinos added an RBI double in the ninth for Texas (92-63), which moved 29 games above .500 for the first time since exactly four years ago on Sept. 24, 2012.Darvish had been 0-3 on the road, winning for the first time in seven away starts, but he had no-decisions in his last three. Darvish allowed two hits, struck out nine and walked one in seven innings a day after Texas became the first AL team to clinch a playoff spot with its second straight division title and seventh AL West title overall.Certainly today thats as good as weve seen Darvish pitch in a while, As manager Bob Melvin said.Three relievers finished the five-hit shutout. Darvish had lost to the As his previous time out, allowing seven runs over five innings in an 11-2 loss last Saturday in Arlington. Now, ace lefty Cole Hamels and Darvish seem poised to give the Rangers a powerful 1-2 to start the playoffs.Im sure the confidence level is high, Banister said.As rookie Raul Alcantara (1-2), someone Melvin considers a candidate for the rotation next season, struck out six with one walk over six innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits and has surrendered five home runs in four major league starts.Oakland had the bases loaded in the eighth but Vogt flied out.TRAINERS ROOMRangers: RHP Tony Barnette threw 20 pitches to hitters as he works back from a strained oblique and could get into games early in the week. He has no lingering discomfort in his left side. Im ready to roll, he said. Back to normal. ... OF Shin-Soo Choo hit against Barnette. On Friday, he took batting practice for the first time since August surgery to have a plate inserted for a fracture near the left wrist. ... LHP Derek Holland is moving to the bullpen as Banister, his staff and general manager Jon Daniels evaluate how the Rangers playoff roster might look. Carrying eight relievers over the seven Texas had a year ago for a five-game division series defeat to Toronto is Banisters leaning right now.Athletics: RHP Sonny Gray threw close to 50 pitches between his warmups and a simulated game with the hopes he still can get into a game situation before seasons end. Gray hasnt pitched since Aug. 6 because of a strained right forearm. How Melvin uses him is still to be determined. I know his routine suggests hes used to starting, Melvin said. Well see.UP NEXTRangers: RHP Colby Lewis (6-3, 3.40 ERA) seeks his first win in three starts since coming off a two-month stint on the disabled list with a back strain. Lewis, projected the No. 3 playoff starter, has won four straight starts at the Coliseum since June 2014 and is 7-2 with a 2.65 ERA in 12 outings in Oakland since returning to the U.S. from Japan in 2010.Athletics: Rookie RHP Jharel Cotton (1-0, 1.50), another young pitcher chasing a rotation spot for 2017, has allowed one or fewer earned runs and pitched at least five innings in his first three major league starts. . Now, with Game 6 set for Fenway Park and an 8:07 p.m. ET first pitch, the Detroit Tigers face the unenviable task of having to beat the Boston Red Sox twice, on the road, to advance to the World Series. . One game after a miserable showing in Oklahoma City, Gay tied a career high with 41 points and the Sacramento Kings cruised to a 114-97 victory at the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. FLORHAM PARK, N. .J. -- The New York Jets have placed running back Bernard Pierce on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and signed veteran running back Antone Smith.Pierce was signed by the Jets when training camp started last month to replace Zac Stacy, who was waived after failing his physical while coming off a broken ankle last season. Pierce spent last season with Jacksonville after three years with Baltimore. He had been hampered by the hamstring injury the past few weeks.Smith spent last season with Chicago, where he had one carry for 11 yards. He was with Atlanta for six years and has rushed for 297 yards and four touchdowns, and caught 15 passes for 232 yards and three scores in his career.---AP NFL website: and AP NFL Twitter feed: .C. Lions has come to an end. Banks told TSN on Jan 2 that he had no interest in playing out the option year of his contract with the Lions in 2014, and he again made that clear in a conversation with Lions GM Wally Buono last week. .  Aside from the trilogy main event title fight, there are a number of intriguing matchups in the heavyweight, welterweight and lightweight divisions. . The Oilers come in having lost five in a row (0-4-1) and 16 of their last 20 games, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. When the Houston Comets won the last of their four WNBA titles in 2000, Maya Moore was an 11-year-old who already had big plans. She wanted to play in the Final Four someday. And the WNBA? Yeah, that too.Perhaps even as ambitious a goal-setter as Moore might not have been aiming for matching the Comets. Yet 16 years later, Moore and the Minnesota Lynx are in position to do just that. Its out there, and we know it, said Moore, whose Lynx host Game 1 of the WNBA Finals against Los Angeles on Sunday (ABC, 3 p.m. ET). We use it as excitement. We have an opportunity, and it makes our appreciation of this even greater. Its pushing us forward, giving us good pressure. But we also know we have to just lock in and do all those other things it takes to win a championship. The Lynx are in a stretch of WNBA success thats the closest thing the league has had to the Comets. Minnesota has made the WNBA Finals five of the last six years, winning titles in 2011, 13 and 15.A championship this year will not just tie the Comets but also be the first time a WNBA team has won back-to-back titles since Los Angeles in 2001-02. Phoenix is the only other franchise with three championships (2007, 09 and 14).The Comets won the first four titles in the leagues existence, but they never made it back to the WNBA Finals after 2000. The franchise was one of the casualties of the economic crisis of the last decade, folding after the 2008 season. The WNBA has lost other teams, including another champion in the Sacramento Monarchs. But no loss hurt more than the Comets, because they were the first standard-bearers for the WNBA.Now that role goes to the Lynx, an expansion franchise that began play in 1999 and made the playoffs just twice in its first 12 years. But once the organization figured things out, it has been able to do something thats even harder than reaching a peak: stay there. If you know the history of the league, we take pride in representing things right, said Seimone Augustus, the longest-tenured Lynx player. [The Comets] set the precedent for us to be where were at. We understand what were doing is helping the league grow.Turning the tideThe Lynx drafted Augustus No. 1 in 2006. The WNBA draft that year was held in Boston, the same city as the Womens Final Four, and Augustus smiled for the cameras holding up her Lynx jersey just a few days after her LSU team had lost in the national semifinals to Duke.Augustus had spent her life in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and now was headed all the way up to Minneapolis to start her pro career. The previous season, the Lynx dealt star Katie Smith in a trade that really got them nothing. Augustus was to be the new building block, but the construction was going to take awhile. The Lynx had losing records in Augustus first five seasons, going a combined 63-107 and not making the playoffs. By 2010, Augustus was playing for her fifth coach, Cheryl Reeve. But that was the year, Augustus said, she could see the light at the end of the tunnel.Native Minnesotan Lindsay Whalen, whod starred collegiately for the Minnesota Gophers, was obtained in a trade. Rebekkah Brunson was picked in the dispersal draft after Sacramento folded. With them, the Lynx finished 2010 at 13-21, but they knew they were on the verge. And they had the No. 1 pick for 2011, which was a fabulous year to be in that spot.It meant that Moore, who won two championships and was part of a record 90-game winning streak at UConn, was coming to Minnesota. With her, the Lynx then had a Core Four -- Augustus, Brunson, Moore and Whalen -- similar to the Big Four that had powered the Comets: Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson and Janeth Arcain. In Reeve, the Lynx had a coach with championship experience as an assistant with Detroit, and they had a general manager in Roger Griffith who had found his stride in putting together the right pieces for the organization. It paid off with a 2011 championship, as Minnesota swept Atlanta. The Lynx havent had a lapse since. They ran into a team of destiny situation in falling to Indiana in the 2012 WNBA Finals, and a red-hot Phoenix team beat Minnesota in thhe 2014 Western Conference finals. But the Lynx swept Atlanta to win the 2013 title and beat Indiana in a tough five-game championship series in 2015.Weve had a lot of the same people, but that doesnt necessarily mean its just going to automatically happen, Moore said. We dont always get it right. But at the end of the day, we just want to win, and were convinced about how we do that. Weve had to evolve and make adjustments, though. In 2015, Monica Wright was traded to Seattle for Renee Montgomery. The Lynx also obtained Spanish player Anna Cruz, and she and Montgomery gave Minnesota a different look at guard than Whalen and Augustus. But the biggest change of all came in late July with the trade to bring in center Sylvia Fowles, who had sat out the season to that point to force a deal.Adding another Olympian was a great thing, of course, but the Lynx went through some difficulties incorporating her into the mix. They finished 22-12 yet by playoff time were ready for another championship run. Fowles was the WNBA Finals MVP.We had more movement on the roster than wed had since I got here, Moore said. But still, that culture remained because we brought in people that want to win. Were very picky, I think. Very selective.Winning mentalityBut theyre not haughty, or arrogant, or cocky. To the contrary, the collective personality of the team reflects that of the individuals themselves: The Lynx remain blue-collar and humble, despite all the success and accolades.Lindsay Whalen is the emotional leader of this team, Moore said of the rock-steady point guard. Seimone is as well, just in a little different way. Its a special, special group. You have people like Rebekkah Brunson, who is one of the most unbelievable players to have played the game. Players like Syl, who sacrificed and sat out, because she wanted to be here. Some international players have come in and helped us. And everybody just falls in line with the culture, because we appreciate each other and push each other, too. Then theres the coaching staff: Reeve, former NBA player Jim Petersen and Shelley Patterson, who like Reeve has spent decades coaching womens hoops. Petersen was hired in 2009 by previous coach Don Zierden, stayed when Jennifer Gillom took over and then was retained by Reeve. She understood the value he brought as a mentor to post players, along with his tactical acumen. The Lynx coaching brain trust has embraced analytics and has the flexibility to be creative with what the team does offensively and defensively. The organization has kept the talent it has, plus brought in more.It comes from the people from the top down, including our owner, Moore said of Glen Taylor. We have a team dinner at his house every spring, and it starts there. And Cheryl does such a great job of holding a high standard but investing just as much herself as she wants from us.Reeve does not spend much time on history lessons, in part because she has such a mature team. But ...We had some dialogue early in the season. Just that we have the chance to be the best Lynx team ever, Reeve said. But we understood that means you have to have a championship that season. That was not necessarily a carrot, but a statement of our potential. So it was, How are we going to do it?Then we had to get to work and define roles. Ive enjoyed the heck out of this group; its been so rewarding.Minnesota became the best Lynx team ever as far as the regular season, with a 28-6 record. Now, though, the Lynx will try to take another step to a fourth title. And Moore fully appreciates that Houston is still the benchmark for WNBA success.Youre trying to soak up every opportunity and take advantage of what comes your way, Moore said. Cheryl and our coaching staff do a great job of giving us perspective so we dont lose the joy and appreciation of what were doing, because its hard.I think we have a great balance of not taking anything for granted. Enjoying the ride, but working our tails off. And hoping for the best. PRETORIA, South Africa -- Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn led an exodus of players out of the three-time Super Rugby champion Bulls and to overseas clubs on Tuesday, the latest group of South African internationals to head to big-paying teams in Europe and Japan. Orange Air Max 97 Shop . The Pretoria-based Bulls said the contracts of the eight players, all Springboks, had expired and they would leave before the start of the domestic Currie Cup this weekend. Their departure was confirmed three days after the Bulls lost to Australian team ACT Brumbies in the Super Rugby semifinals, the first time the Bulls have dropped a post-season game in South Africa. "These players all became Springboks at the Vodacom Blue Bulls, which speaks volumes of how much impact they had in our structures and teams," Bulls chief executive Barend van Graan said. The Bulls tried to retain a number of the players, but said they couldnt compete with the salaries overseas, which continue to draw away South Africas top rugby talent. Steyn, who has played more than 100 Super Rugby games for the Bulls and is the Springboks second-highest point scorer in tests, will join Stade Francais in France. Six of the eight players leaving Pretoria are still viewed as part of Springbok coach Heyneke Meyers plans and join a growing list of Springboks overseas. National try-scoring record holder Bryan Habana joined French club Toulon from Cape Towns Stormers this month, while fellow internationals JP Pietersen and Andries Bekker have signed for Japanese clubs. The 2.08-meter (6-foot-10) Bekkers international career was likely ended by his move to Japanese team Kobelco Steelers. Pietersen rocketed into the top 10 sports earners in South Africa after signing a $1.1 million per season contract with Japanese club Panasonic Wild Knights, South African newspaper The Sunday Times reported recently. Pietersens Japan deal was more than five times more than what he makes a year in South Africa off his provincial and national contracts combined. Along with Steyn, hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, lock Juandre Kruger, loose forwards Dewald Potgieter and Jacques Potgieter, scrumhalf Jano Vermaak, centre Wynand Olivier and fullback Zane Kirchner also officially left the Bulls. The Bulls announced later Tuesday they had signed scrumhalf Piet Van Zyl from the Cheetahs to replace Vermaak. Habana, Pietersen, Steyn, Ralepelle, Kruger, Jacques Potgieter, Vermaak and Kirchner are all current Springboks and the number of internationals now playing overseas and in different seasons will complicate Meyers plans for the national team, which starts its Rugby Championship campaign on Aug. 17 against Argentina. South Africa flanker Francois Louw and scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar already play in Europe. No. 2-ranked South Africa won the last of its three southern hemisphere rugby titles in 2009. OAKLAND, Calif. Air Jordan 4 Retro Outlet . -- Ross Detwiler knows it will take more than one strong outing for people to take him seriously again as a starting pitcher.Eight scoreless innings in his Oakland Athletics debut is certainly a good place to start, and far more than what manager Bob Melvin hoped for from his new left-hander.Detwiler and John Axford combined on a seven-hitter and Oakland beat Baltimore 1-0 on Wednesday night to knock the Orioles out of first place in the AL East. Our reports had more fastballs than anything else but he mixed it up really good today, Melvin said. Some curveballs, some sliders, some changeups. It was way more than we expected.Called up from the minors earlier in the day, Detwiler (1-0) allowed six hits over a career-high eight innings and struck out two while leading the As to their third consecutive one-run win over the Orioles. It was Detwilers first win as a starting pitcher since he was with Washington and beat the Chicago Cubs on May 10, 2013.Not bad for a pitcher who has spent most of the past two-plus seasons as a reliever. Detwiler was also nearly out of baseball after being designated for assignment by Cleveland in July before the As acquired him in a trade. Its a good start but its just one good start, Detwiler said. Its a good step in the right direction. I walked in last night ... and I felt like I had been here for a long time. I was welcomed with open arms and that helps a lot.Axford retired three batters for his second save.Chris Davis had two hits for Baltimore. The Orioles entered the day percentage points ahead of Toronto but fell a game behind the Blue Jays, who beat Tampa Bay 7-0 earlier Wednesday. Its the time of year we cant find a break, Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado said. Were all struggling right now. Real teams will come out of it. We know were better than this.Marcus Semien and Yonder Alonso hit consecutive doubles in the third inning for the games only run.The As had lost eight of nine and were swept in three games by the Chicago Cubs before stunning the Orioles.Baltimore starter Yovani Gallardo (4-4 ) allowed one run in six innings with six strikeouts and two walks.NAILED AT THE PLATEDetwiler gave up a single and a double to the first two hitters he faced and threw two wild pitches in the first inning but escaped without allowing a run. Adam Jones was thrown out sliding into home by Oakland second baseman Max Muncy in the inning. Jones tried to score on J.J. Hardys double over the head of right fielder Danny Valencia and was initially ruled safe by home plate umpire Chad Fairchild. The As challenged and the call was overturned when replays showed Jones front leg above the plate when he was tagged out.I think the slide helped us out some, that (Jones) was above the plate, Melvin said. You dont think at that time thats going to be a key play in the game but it ended up being one.TRAINERS ROOMOrioles: T.J. McFarland (left knee inflammation) pitched three scoreless innings for the Gulf Coast Orioles. McFarland is scheduled to pitch next for Single-A Frederick on Monday.Athletics: Former closer Sean Doolittle (strained left shoulder) will throw off a mound this weekend and will need to face hitters at least twice before beginning a rehab assignment. ... Left-handed reliever Patrick Schuster was designated for assignment.UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Chris Tillman (14-4) faces the As in a mid-day game at the Coliseum. Tillman will try to become the first Baltimore pitcher with at least 15 wins since Bud Norris and Wei-Yin Chen in 2014.Athletics: RHP Andrew Triggs (0-0) will come out of the bullpen to make his second career start in the series finale. Robredo, ranked No. 16, bounced back from an upset loss to Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the Royal Guard Open in Chile last week to down Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 25 minutes. On a day filled mostly with qualifying matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also entered the second with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, while Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance. While a few metres away Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb collected their bags for the very first time as Australian Test cricketers, Callum Ferguson reflected on how he had been picked and discarded in the space of a single week. The scenes at Adelaide Airport - apart from the scuffle between South Africas support staff and an eager television reporter - reflected these strange and tumultuous times for Australian cricket. Handscomb and Matthew Wade arrived from Melbourne a few minutes before Renshaw and Usman Khawaja jetted in from Brisbane. They were accompanied by the South Australian side that failed by 12 balls to eke out a draw against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba. After the travails of the past two weeks it isnt hard to imagine numerous figures at Cricket Australia hoping the Test team can be that competitive against South Africa this week. The last man out at the Gabba, Chadd Sayers, wandered through the arrivals hall in an Australia team polo Ferguson had donned only a few days before. Though he had every reason to be upset, even bitter about his treatment, Ferguson put on a commendably brave face, befitting the even temperament of a man who has retained his perspective and hunger to perform even in the face of two knee reconstructions.Asked whether he was confused by how he had been dumped so rapidly, Ferguson did not bite: Just disappointed at this stage, as you are whenever you get left out of a team. It is disappointing anytime you get left out of a side, so its back to the drawing board. Make runs for South Australia, win games and hhopefully fight my way back in. Cheap Air Jordan 4 Retro China. .It was certainly a really exciting week but a disappointing one. We had a really tough week on the field. Im backing the Australian side to bounce back after this, it has been a tough few months but certainly theyve got the quality in the side so I think they can bounce back. The interim selection chairman Trevor Hohns had offered Ferguson a slight glimmer of hope for the future when informing him that his services were no longer required - there has been talk of taking him to India. I spoke to Trevor the other day and he said the door is certainly not shut, he said. Get out there, make runs and certainly youve got an opportunity to get back in there if you do put them on the board. The sheer turnover of Australian players was not lost on Josh Hazlewood, formerly a young bowler in the team yet now one of the more senior members. I think with such a young group, it is exciting, he said. We get to build something together. I think there is not as much pressure because its everyones first game. We need to start from a point moving forward and hopefully this group gets an opportunity to do that, not only in one game but over a period of time.Later in the afternoon, Renshaw trained at Adelaide Oval for the first time, and in practice occupied the first slip post that had until last week belonged to Adam Voges. All connected with Australian cricket, even Ferguson, will hope the revolving door stops here.
